Luzon, Philippines Defeats Chesterfield, Virginia 7-6

In game six of the 2019 Bronco-11 World Series (B11WS), Chesterfield, Virginia and Luzon, Philippines went back and forth before Luzon scored a run in the seventh inning to win the game. Despite Jakub Bowen’s dominant pitching performance for Chesterfield of allowing two earned runs over 5.1 innings, Luzon was able to muster enough offense to pull off the victory.

Luzon scored one run in the top of the first inning to open the scoring. After Ken Madrid reached first on an infield single, Aljun Tapia doubled to center field, scoring Madrid.

Chesterfield responded by adding two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Wyatt Capps reached base on an error, then advanced to third on consecutive throwing errors. Clayton Washington reached on an outfield error, scoring Capps for the first run of the inning. Washington scored the second run of the inning thanks to Riley Royster’s double.

Luzon added one run in the top of the third to tie the game. Luis Sebastian opened the inning with a walk. Sebastian then advanced to third on consecutive fielder’s choices. Madrid doubled to center field, which scored Sebastian and tied the game.

Chesterfield managed to regain the lead after scoring one run in the bottom of the third. Bowen reached first on a single, then advanced to second on Logan Long’s single. Capps hit into a fielder’s choice, moving Bowen to third. Washington hit into another fielder’s choice, scoring Bowen.

Luzon scored three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. A walk with the bases loaded allowed Alfonso Alcantra to score. Laurence Valeros hit into a fielder’s choice with the based loaded, scoring Alejandro Bustamante for the second run of the inning. Leohj Palanog singled to left field, scoring Amadeus Trozado for the third and final run of the inning.

Chesterfield added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at five. After Carmine Rosso singled, Nate Reed reached second base on an error, which moved Rosso to third. Rosso scored on a passed ball, which also advanced Reed to third. Another error by the catcher allowed Reed to score, tying the game at five.

Luzon scored one run in the top of the sixth to regain the lead. After Zephyr Tolentino walked, Valeros grounded into a fielder’s choice, moving Tolentino to second. Palanog reached base due to a fielding error, allowing Tolentino to score.

Chesterfield came back in the bottom of the sixth to once again tie the game. Rosso opened the hitting with a two-out double to center field. After Reed walked, Bowen reached on a fielding error, advancing the runners. A passed ball allowed Rosso to score and tie the game, putting both the Chesterfield and the Luzon fans on the edge of their seats.

The Philippines only needed one run to beat Chesterfield, which they scored in the top of the seventh. Alcantra doubled to left field with one out. Bustamante reached base on a fielding error, which scored Alcantra. Jan Soriano earned the save for Luzon in the seventh with a one, two, three inning.

The Philippines will advance and play San Antonio, Texas at 5:30 p.m. ET/US on Sunday, July 28 at Harry G. Daniel Park at Iron Bridge. Chesterfield ends its official B11WS run after going 0-2 in the tournament. Chesterfield will play in a consolation game against the Bronx, New York at 2:00 p.m. ET/US on Sunday, July 28 at Harry G.
